Ramdhani’s journey to Tokyo starts

Sunburst national badminton player Narayan Ramdhnai departed on Monday to commence his five year scholarship contract with Shuttlesport Badminton Academy located in Vancouver.

The national junior sportsman of the year, who recently returned from a successful Caribbean Championships, is utilizing the scholarship in an attempt to become Guyana’s first badminton player at an Olympics game. He will be training towards the 2020 Olympics and also working to complete his college and university education.

The opportunity was afforded to Ramdhani after he reached 53 ranked in the world. He was approached by five international Universities/Clubs and he favored Shuttlesport, which had all the right conditions to take him to his goals in Badminton and his education. In September, Narayan will start school at the Douglas College based in Vancouver and start his training with Shuttlesport Badminton Academy.

This achievement did not come overnight as the player started at the age of four and attend his first international tournament at just six years old. He continued in an upwards direction, winning all his age group tournaments locally. He then moved on to be Guyana’s Junior and Senior Champion. He continued to dominate in the Caribbean, Pan American and South America Tournaments and although still a junior player, he qualified and played the senior events at the CAC Games 2014 in Veracruz Mexico, the Pan Am Olympic Fesitval 2014 in Xalapa Mexico and the Pan Am Games 2015 in Toronto Canada.

Some of his Achievements include, Junior Sportsman of the Year (2015), National Under-19 and Open Champion, as well as triple gold Suriname Easter International 2016

Message from Arif (al) Mawani – shuttlesport badminton academy performance director: The Shuttle sport Badminton Academy located in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada is pleased to announce that Narayan Ramdhani will be training at the Shuttlesport Academy beginning September 2016.

Performance Director Al Mawani is looking forward to having Narayan join the elite training group.  “Narayan has high goals that he would like to achieve and joining the elite training group will hopefully allow him to do that” commented Mawani.

The Shuttlesport elite training group has produced several national champions as well as international champions in the past.   It is anticipated that Narayan can follow in their footsteps.    “Narayan is a definite talent and with the right attitude and work ethic I can see him one day competing with the best” added coach Mawani.

Narayan is on the verge of creating history of becoming Guyana’s first badminton Olympian, it is a matter of self belief and discipline among other factors that could help him through his journey.
