RDC commences drainage works to bring relief to residents
Rainbow City flooding
Following flooding in Rainbow City, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) is currently facilitating drainage works in the area.
Residents in the area recently voiced concerns after suffering during intense flooding due to the blockage of the neighbouring Hymara Creek.
Affected residents had also pointed out that the issue was compounded due to the failure of the relevant authorities to have the creek dug and regularly maintained.
With the inclement weather pattern, the situation had worsened. However, residents are beginning to breathe a sigh of relief as works commenced on Wednesday.
The clearing of the main drain which leads from Industrial Area to First Street, Rainbow City, is aimed at assisting with the heavy flow of water. This is also being done through to the Hymara Creek.
According to a resident, a proper concrete main drain needs to be constructed for future reference as they pointed out that this would be easier to clean.
“Not just digging a drain but installing a proper concrete drain since the drain would cave in when it rains heavily. Presently, the drain is sand and erosion is one of the main factors that contribute to the flooding”, the resident told this publication on Wednesday.
The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) also responded to the plight of the Rainbow City residents following complaints by regional officials and are expected to distribute hampers to those affected by the recent floods.
Rainbow City and areas in Kara Kara have been affected by major flooding in the past.
Following a severe flood in these areas 2016, it was revealed by officials who carried out investigations that this was due to blockage of the Hymara Creek.
This was reportedly caused by heavy garbage build-up and thick vegetation. This resulted in the authorities desilting the creek.
Residents had indicated that the creek is expected to be regularly maintained by desilting at least twice a year, however, they noted that this has not been done by the authorities in recent times.
