One day after being recaptured by Joint Services ranks in Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD), Devon Ally of West Minster, West Bank Demerara (WBD), on Thursday was swiftly arraigned at the Wales Magistrate’s Court, where he was granted $200,000 bail for rape of a child under 16.
At his appearance before Magistrate Annette Singh, 21-year-old Ally did not waste
the court’s time and he admitted that he escaped lawful custody when he fled the La Grange Police Station on January 2, 2018.
He also owned up to assaulting his sister, causing her actual bodily harm. After some consideration, Magistrate Singh fined him $30,000 for the unlawful escape charge or a default sentence of 16 weeks in prison. For assaulting his own sister, Ally was handed a fine of $25,000 or two months’ imprisonment.
When he was arrested on Wednesday, Police indicated that Ally was found with two plastic face masks in his possession. He had fled the La Grange Police Station just one day after New Year’s Day, in the moments after he was detained for suspicion of committing rape.
This was not the first prison escape from the La Grange Station in recent memory as murder suspect Anthony Jhagroo had fled the station lockups in July 2016 after he had been held in connection with the murder of mechanic Yogeshwar Shivcharran, who was beaten at Belle West, WBD and had succumbed to his injuries six days later.
