Region 10 to explore possibility of duty-free zone – Chairman

Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) Chairman Renis Morian said he will pursue the idea of developing a duty-free zone in the region, noting that it has the potential to add tremendous benefits to the community. A duty-free zone is one in which goods can be imported and exported without having to pay taxes.

During the recent hosting of the statutory meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Morian told Councillors that they should further meet and discuss the possibility, after which, he said a document outlining plans will then be submitted to Central Government. Given the infrastructure of the region, the Regional Chairman said the initiative could be explored and developed, while noting that it is one which can create much needed employment in the region, provided that all goes well.
“I’m looking at a duty-free zone in Region 10… we have the river, we have the roads, we have the land mass. That will bring tremendous employment to Region 10,” Morian asserted.
The Council is expected to meet to further discuss the details surrounding the venture.
“I want us to sit and have a comprehensive look of how this will benefit us, we all share and then we write one document to the Government to say well this is our desire,” the Regional Chairman told members of the Council.
