Region 2 man pleads guilty to fatally stabbing wife

Accused of stabbing his wife to death before attempting to take his own life in 2019, Devanand Narine has pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter.
Back in 2019, the Police said, 52-year-old Devanand Narine stabbed his wife Farida Khayum to death during an argument at their home at Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Arraigned before Essequibo High Court Judge Jo-Ann Barlow on Wednesday, Narine admitted to unlawfully killing his wife on May 16, 2019. Sentencing for the confessed killer has been adjourned until March 8.
When asked by the judge if he was entering the guilty plea of his own will, Narine replied in the affirmative, and said, “I doing this from my heart, because I love my wife”. He is being represented by Attorney-at-Law Latchmie Dindyal, while State Counsel Tiffini Lyken is presenting the case for the prosecution.
Reports state that on the day in question, Narine and his 39-year-old wife were involved in a heated argument in the kitchen area of their home. He reportedly then armed himself with a knife and stabbed his wife about her body, including to her neck. The woman was subsequently rushed to the Suddie hospital, where she later died.
As the Police arrived at the scene, they found Narine in an unconscious state, with an empty bottle which is suspected to have contained a poisonous substance nearby. (G1)
