Region 2 residents decry deplorable state of roads

Residents along the Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), are calling on the regional administration to address their concerns about the deplorable state of several community roads.
The situation has worsened following the prolonged rainfall. Some of the roads identified are along the main access road to Mainstay, Lima Sands access road, Tapakuma access road, Capoey access road, and Onderneeming Sandpit access road.
“The residents of Mainstay, Essequibo Coast talking to the authorities, but just promises even for just a quick fix… vehicles do not want to go down our streets to take us home… you have to wait hours after work with all kind of styles from taxi drivers…. The holes are so deep it is hard to navigate through them. We need help, for years we are begging,” a resident of Mainstay told Guyana Times.
A resident at Capoey Compound, Preamodeep Jaisingh explained that it has been years since the road has been in a deplorable state while noting that more damage is being done on the road due to the heavy-duty trucks that regularly traverse the area.

When contacted, Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit noted that $160 million was released by the Government of Guyana for the construction of the Lima Sands Access Road. He added that the contract is currently being advertised.
“We know we can’t finish all the roads at once, so an appeal was made to Minister Edghill to support us in getting these roads done,” the Vice Chairman noted.
Oodit added the Government is trying its best to make the lives of residents along the Essequibo Coast more comfortable especially by providing the basic infrastructure.
