Guyana’s COVID-19 death toll has gone up to 1272 after another person who tested positive for the novel coronavirus died.
According to the Health Ministry on Sunday, the latest fatality is an 87-year-old male from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), who succumbed on Saturday, August 6.
This is the first COVID-19 death recorded for the month of August.
Meanwhile, another 26 persons tested positive for COVID-19 within the previous 24-hour period.
The total number of confirmed cases in the country is now 70,152, but only 495 of these are currently active cases, including one person who is in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the remaining persons in isolation – 480 in home isolation and the other 14 in institutional isolation.
Another five persons are currently in institutional quarantine.
To date, some 68,385 persons have recovered from the life-threatening virus.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the Guyana, a total 679,491 tests were conducted of which 32,134 males and 38,018 females tested positive.
A breakdown of the new infections shows three cases for Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), two for Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), 14 for Demerara-Mahaica, one for Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), five for Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) and one for Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
There were no increases in the other four regions across the country.
The most recent vaccination numbers show that so far, 445,168 or 86.8 per cent of adults have taken a first dose, while 344,803 or 67.2 per cent of persons 18 years and over are fully vaccinated.
For adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17, 35,435 or 48.6 per cent have received a first dose. Second doses stand at 25,925 or 35.5 per cent.
Vaccines are also available for children within five to 11 years, whereby 6964 persons or 6.8 per cent have taken a first dose. Additionally, 2061 or two per cent have received a second jab.
Meanwhile, in excess of 71,000 persons have returned for their first booster dose. Booster doses have been made available for the adolescent age group, as well as second booster doses for the adult population. Persons are encouraged to take these shots before their immunity wanes.
In the Region of the Americas, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases are pegged at over 169 million with a death toll of 2.7 million. Globally, the confirmed positives stand at over 571 million with more than 6.3 million reported deaths.
