Region 5 duo latest COVID-19 fatalities

– 4 new cases recorded from 152 tests

Two more persons who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) died on Saturday, according to the Health Ministry in a statement to the press on Sunday. This now takes the total number of deaths from the pandemic to 164.
The Ministry on Sunday revealed that these latest fatalities are a 53-year-old male and a 74-year-old female both of Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice). These persons died while receiving care at a medical facility.
Guyana last recorded COVID-19 deaths on December 22, when an 88-year-old male from Region 7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and a 68-year-old woman from Region 4 (Demerara-Mahaica) died.
Meanwhile, the Health Ministry also reported on Sunday that four new novel coronavirus cases were recorded within a 24-hour period from the 152 tests that were conducted.
According to the Ministry’s updated COVID-19 dashboard, the total number of confirmed cases in the country now stands at 6293, of which 3254 are males and 3039 females.
Of the total, only 449 are currently active cases. This includes six patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 443 persons in isolation. That is, 13 in institutional isolation and the other 430 in home isolation. There also are 10 persons in institutional quarantine.
To date, some 5680 persons have recovered from the life-threatening virus here; that is, 28 more recoveries than what was recorded the previous day.
Meanwhile, Guyana has tested some 37,451 persons for the novel coronavirus thus far.
Of the four new cases recorded on Sunday, three were detected in the Demerara-Mahaica Region 4, which now has 2692 cases. The other case was recorded in Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Upper Berbice), which now has 514 cases.
The figures in the other eight regions remained the same, with 931 COVID-19 cases in Region One (Barima-Waini), 187 in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), 443 in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), 95 cases in Region 4 (Mahaica-Berbice), 304 in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), 537 in Region 7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), 194 in Region 8 (Potaro-Siparuni), and 396 cases in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as at Sunday, some 79,232,555 confirmed cases were reported globally, along with 1,754,493 deaths.
The WHO also reported on Sunday that in the Region of the Americas, that is, Latin America and the Caribbean, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has increased to 34,403,371, while the death toll has gone up to 840,247.
Since taking office, the PPP/C Government has embarked on a massive testing drive to ensure that all positive cases, especially asymptomatic cases, are detected. This has resulted in a high number of cases being detected.
Nevertheless, Guyanese are reminded to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 EMERGENCY MEASURES (NO. 12), which are in effect until December 31, 2020. This order emphasises, among other things, the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving your home; the importance of maintaining the six-feet physical distance from others; and the need for good hand-hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
