Relocation process for Mocha/Cane View families progressing smoothly

Some 16 families who have been squatting at Mocha/Cane View for decades are currently at various stages of completion of their new homes in developed schemes on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD).
Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal visited the construction site of some of those families who have been relocated to Plantation Herstelling, EBD. Some of the families to be relocated have also been allocated lands in Farm on the EBD.

During the visit, the Minister engaged some of the new homeowners who expressed their satisfaction with their soon-to-be new homes.
Already, some 25 families have signed agreements with the Housing and Water Ministry’s Central Housing and Planning Authority for the relocation.
As of March 22, 2022, some 16 families have started work on their new structures while four families have indicated that within another two weeks, they will be able to relocate completely to their new dwelling place.

Meanwhile, some of the families who were on-site requested the Minister’s intervention for timely service connection from Guyana Water Inc. He promised to have the utility company work to get the homes connected within another week.
The Ministry had engaged a total of 35 families from Cane View on relocation as the Ministry moves to begin construction of the Diamond to Eccles four-lane highway. Prior to the relocation, homeowners who fell within the path of the road were consulted before they signed an agreement. Their existing properties were valued at the current market price by the Valuation Office and those who have agreed have since been compensated, hence the commencement of construction.
