Republican Gym to make return at Andrew Lewis Novices Championship

The Andrew Lewis National Novices Championship, scheduled for May 4-6, is expected to be full of wholesome entertainment as some talented pugilists out of Republican Gym will return to action.
After fire ravaged the Camp Street Prison in July 2016, boxing was ultimately put on hold, but now boxers who showed promising signs prior to the horrific event will have a chance to restake their place in the pecking order in an event organised by the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA).

Some heated boxing action is expected to make its return to the National Gymnasium

The Novices will also feature newcomers Savannah Gym from Lethem and a gym from Mabaruma which add to the list of gyms participating: defending champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF); Police; Young Achievers; Rose Hall Jammers; Pocket Rocket; Carryl Harpy Eagles; Forgotten Youth Foundation; and Vergenoegen.
Last year, GDF ended on 22 points, way ahead of their closest challenger, the Republican Gym, which secured four points. Vergenoegen Gym (formerly Essequibo) was third with two points.
Twenty fights are slated, with admission into the National Gymnasium being $1000 for ringside, and $500 for stands.
