Retrial begins in child sexual activity case at Berbice High Court

Accused: Krishan Tulapersaud

The retrial of Krishna Tulapersaud, also known as Krishna Tulerpersaud, commenced on Wednesday before Justice Simone Morris at the Berbice High Court.
Tulapersaud is indicted on two counts of sexual activity with a child family member. The first count alleges that the offence was committed during the month of February 2013, while the second count alleges that a similar offence occurred during February 2014.
State Counsel Marisa Edwards is presenting the state’s case, while attorney-at-law Arudranauth Gossai is appearing for the accused.
The court heard that the prosecution intends to call six witnesses during the trial.
The matter is being reheard after the Court of Appeal ordered a retrial. Tulapersaud had previously been found guilty of the offences and sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment. However, he subsequently appealed the conviction, and the appellate court ordered that the matter be retried before a new jury.
Proceedings got underway on Wednesday before Justice Morris.
