Robbery suspect injured during shootout with Police

A Sophia, Greater Georgetown, man was rushed into surgery on Thursday after he was shot during a shoot-out with ranks of the Guyana Police Force.

The injured man has been identified as Andrew Smith of ‘C’ Field Squatting Area, Sophia. According to police reports, Smith was wanted for questioning in a series of robberies. Police received information about his whereabouts on Thursday.

Sometime around 11:15h, Police arrived at ‘C’ Field Access Road where they were told that the suspect was seen and as they were approaching the location, Smith whipped out a handgun and discharged several rounds in their direction.

This forced the ranks to return fire which hit the suspect in the upper left region of his body. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) with two gunshot wounds and immediately underwent surgery.

Meanwhile, a snub-nosed .38 revolver along with four live rounds and two spent shells were recovered by Police at the scene.

Investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
