Sandy outduels Green to win Flying Ace/Crawford road race

National junior cyclist Sidwell Sandy produced an impressive performance to win the Flying Ace Cycle Club/Crawford 40-mile road race around New Amsterdam, Berbice.

Sandy outduelled national cyclist Andrea “Padlock” Green to complete the 10-lap event in one hour and 55 minutes. Veteran rider Jaikarran Sookhai finished third overall.
Sandy and Green set a blistering pace from the start and remained locked in a battle at the front of the race. However, as the contest progressed, Sandy managed to pull away from his rival and secure first place.
The pair also dominated the prime-point prizes, sharing the six awards equally with three apiece.
Sookhai led the veteran category after crossing the finish line ahead of Fitzroy Tan. Franco Crawford Sr placed third, followed by Samuel Mootoo, Sherlock Su Hang and Errol Rose.
Eleven-year-old Franco Crawford Jr received a special prize for his performance, while Rose was also recognised as the oldest cyclist to complete the race.
Fourteen cyclists from Regions Five and Six contested the event, which started and finished in front of the Level Up Bar at Charles Place and Republic Road. The riders travelled along Republic Road before turning onto Vryheid Street and Main Street, continuing through Stanleytown and Tacama Turn before returning to Republic Road. The circuit was completed 10 times.
New Amsterdam Mayor Wainwright McIntosh sent the cyclists on their way after leading them on a one-lap ride around the town.
The event was organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club and sponsored by overseas-based former national cyclist and businessman Franco Crawford through Crawford Trucking Services and Auto Dealership and Crawford Business Enterprise. Former Flying Ace cyclist Hardeo Changerie and McIntosh also supported the race.
Flying Ace founder, president and coach Randolph Roberts coordinated the event alongside Crawford. The organisers also commended the Police for their assistance in ensuring the race was conducted successfully.
The next cycling event in Berbice is scheduled for October as part of the New Amsterdam Town Day celebrations.
