Schools’ archery programme kicks off in Region 1

As mandated by their level one coaching course which concluded just a few weeks ago, local archers have set out to spread their knowledge and skills with students across the country.

Two of the recently certified coaches took to the North West Secondary School in Mabaruma, Region One (Barima-Waini) to introduce the students to the sport which is quickly growing in popularity. The introductory session was conducted by Ainsworth Pritchard and Carl Albert.
Head Mistress of the school, Roeady Martinez-Pritchard welcomed the initiative with open arms, as she spoke on the importance of using sport as a tool for encouraging students in the school system. The head mistress admitted that she too was interested in trying her hand at the sport and couldn’t wait to have a feel what it is like to be an archer.
“The Regional Education Officer Mr Nigel Richards and the District Education Officer Mr Marti DeSouza were both part of this introductory session and they were so happy that this discipline will soon come into the school system and we know many of the students are very anxious to learn about archery. It was a great experience,” the head mistress stated at the conclusion of the introductory session.
The level one coaching course was administered by level four international archer Phil Graves. When the course was visited by Social Cohesion Minister with responsibility for sport, Dr George Norton; and Director of Sport Christopher Jones, the announcement was made that not only will the coaches be allowed to share their knowledge with students but the sport will also be introduced to the National Schools Track and Field competition later this year.
The shools’ introductory programme is expected to visit several other schools across Regions One, Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) and Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) in order to prepare those students, should they wish to participate in the national competition.
