Selman bursting with pride at GAW Women’s successful campaign

After an exciting game of cricket, Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) Women’s Head Coach Shaker Selman was beaming with pride, especially with the performances of the local players in the squad that helped them to lift the Limacol Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) trophy for the first time.
The GAW Women romped to the Limacol WCPL title win on Thursday last, defeating the Trinbago Knight Riders women by two wickets, with three balls to spare.
It was a game of high intensity, going either way in a seesaw manner before being decided in the final over.

Head Coach Shakera Selman, after a successful campaign in her first stint as Head Coach of the side, expressed gratitude and detailed their approach to the chase.
Selman expressed, “I’m really grateful, really thankful to God, firstly. Thankful to the players and the support staff, I think they all supported well and made it easy.”
Turning her attention to the gritty chase, the Head Coach told this publication exclusively, “It’s a game that ebbed and flowed, and it’s the excitement that the crowd wants. At the 10-over mark, we felt as though we had a set batter in; we were still in with a chance of winning the game. And it was very simple: a boundary every over meant that we were going to be in with the game, take it as deep as possible, and then we knew we could get over the line.”
Chedean Nation, in her first innings with the bat for the season, came clutch, hitting four sixes in a match-winning 39 0ff 21.
Selman articulated her pride in Nation’s performance.
“Yeah, I’m really proud of her. “Many people probably wouldn’t know this, but we are actually best friends,” Selman divulged. “So, I’m even more proud of her because she’s my best friend, but I’m really happy to see that she stepped up and showed all her experience, and it wouldn’t have been easy for her to be sitting on the bench at the start of the tournament. She really stepped up when we needed it and was really happy that it’s a local player that won the game.”

Shifting focus to Player of the Tournament Shemaine Campbelle, who also ended the season as the highest run scorer, accumulating 154 runs, inclusive of one half-century; the Head Coach described her campaign as inspiring.
She opined, “Shemaine was brilliant. I think she, obviously, brought the confidence from a World Cup into this competition. She was good throughout this competition. She obviously didn’t have the score that she wanted today, but she was able to get us to the final. So, she’s very instrumental in that.”
“I think what she’s shown is that this tournament is not about the internationals; the local players are also good enough, and hopefully, she inspires other Guyanese and other West Indian players,” Selman went on to add.
Further quizzed on whether or not she is now open to taking her successes to the regional women’s side, Selman responded, “I’m waiting my turn. If they think I’m ready, I’m willing. I’m always willing to help West Indies cricket, so any opportunities I’m given, then I’m up to the task.”
