Several busted with guns, ammo during CANU operation

Several persons were taken into custody following the discovery of two firearms with ammunition along Robb Street, Georgetown, on Friday.
The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) stated that officers, acting on intelligence received, went to the location, where they seized one Taurus TX22 semi-automatic pistol with 29 rounds of .22 LR ammunition and one round of 5.56 mm ammunition commonly used in AR-15 rifles.
However, during the raid, several persons who were at the premises were arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters as investigations continued.

In July, the drug enforcement unit reported that it had recovered a total of 35 illegal firearms and 699 rounds of ammunition during the first half of 2026, in comparison to 8 firearms and 76 rounds seized during the same period in 2025.
Rifles dominated the firearm seizures, accounting for 23 of the 35 weapons recovered (65.7 per cent), followed by six shotguns and seven handguns.
The ammunition profile was similarly weighted toward high-powered weaponry, with 504 rounds of 7. 62×39 mm calibre, the standard round for AK-pattern assault rifles, accounting for the bulk of recovered rounds.
Following the seizures, Director of CANU, James Singh, stated that the seizures reported for the first half of 2026 reflect the unwavering commitment of every CANU officer to its core mandate.
