A Chinese national was on Friday slapped with several traffic-related charges following an accident that claimed the life of 21-year-old Christopher Thomas along the Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Wednesday evening.
Zeng Huqaing, 39, attached to the CRBC Construction Camp and of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, was on Friday charged with driving without a valid driver ‘s licence; driving an unlicensed motor vehicle; driving an uncertified motor vehicle; and driving an uninsured motor vehicle.
He appeared before Magistrate Timeka Clarke at the Friendship Magistrate’s Court, where the charges were read to him. He pleaded not guilty to all four offences. As such, he was remanded to the Lusignan Prison until August 14, 2026. He is yet to be charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
It was reported that a motor van, PAG 8745, driven by the Chinese national, was proceeding along the roadway and, upon approaching the entrance to a worksite compound, allegedly turned right into the compound without stopping.
In the process, the vehicle collided with Thomas, who was driving motorcycle CR 8010 with a 24-year-old man from Grand Sand Road, Soesdyke, EBD as the pillion rider.
As a result of the collision, Thomas and the pillion rider were flung onto the roadway and sustained injuries to their bodies. They were picked up and taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where Thomas was pronounced dead. The pillion rider remains a patient at the hospital.
A breathalyser test conducted on the driver of the motor van returned a reading of 0.07 micrograms, which is below the prescribed legal limit.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) stated that it remains committed to enforcing the nation’s traffic laws and reminds all motorists that driving without the required licence, certification and insurance places all road users at serious risk and carries significant legal consequences.
