Several hospitalised after gas leak at fishing company
A suspected gas leak, which occurred around 14:00h on Monday at Pritipaul Fishery at Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara, has left at least 12 people hospitalized at the Woodlands Hospital.
At the medical facility, the affected workers were still shaking and while some of them remained tight-lipped, a few told Guyana Times that they recognised a
strange scent in the workplace since about 06:00h and immediately reported the matter to their superiors.
The scent is believed to be that of ammonium gas. However, at the time of the report, the employees’ superiors refused to act in a speedy manner until workers started to faint.
The workers in the department were evacuated and those who were affected were taken to the private medical institution where they were up to late Monday evening being treated.
This publication understands that although such occurrences were not strange to the Fishery Department, this was the first time such a gas leak affected the employees.
