Shepherd, Hetmyer continue commitment to Berbice cricket with sponsorships

Not forgetting the proverbial bridge they had to cross in their journey to fame and fortune, West Indies players Romario Shepherd and Shimron Hetmyer continue to support cricket in Berbice.
Shepherd, who plays locally for Tucber Park in New Amsterdam, has recently reconfirmed his sponsorship of a Berbice under-13 tournament, while Hetmyer, who plays for the Young Warriors of East Canje, will assist the charity project of Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) for Christmas 2021.

BCB President Hilbert Foster

In a statement from the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), it was disclosed that Shepherd made contact with BCB President Hilbert Foster to reconfirm his sponsorship of the under-13 tournament.
“The BCB is delighted to inform the general public that West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd today (Tuesday) contacted our President Hilbert Foster to reconfirm his sponsorship of a countywide under-13 tournament. The talented all-rounder had earlier this year committed to sponsoring the tournament before the rise of COVID-19 cases forced the matches to be called off,” the BCB said.
Among the clubs that have registered to date for this Under-13 tournament are: Albion, Rose Hall Town Poonai Pharmacy, Port Mourant, Achievers, Rose Hall Canje, Mount Sinai, Guymine and Edinburgh. The eight teams would be divided into two zones, with two teams from each zone advancing to the semifinals. The tournament is expected to start shortly, and persons born no earlier than January 1, 2008 are eligible to participate.

Berbicians Romario Shepherd and Shimron Hetmyer

Hetmyer, who is currently at home in Berbice, met with Foster for an hour, during which a wide range of topics, including ideas for the development of the game in Guyana and Berbice, were discussed.
Hetmyer also committed to assisting the RHTYSC’s massive charity project for Christmas 2021. He and his wife Nirvani would hand over the donation to Foster today (Thursday, November 18). The donation would enable the distribution of 1000 food hampers to less fortunate families across the ancient county.
The RHTY&SC would also be sharing out thousands of toys to children of single- parent households.
