Shop owner charged for operating brothel

A shop owner was granted bail on Wednesday after being charged with operating a brothel.
Ceon Dawson, of First Avenue, Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni), appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The charge stated that between June 21 and June 28, 2019, at Red Man Shop, Upper Mazaruni River, Region Seven, he operated a brothel at the shop.
According to information, ranks from the Trafficking in Person (TIP) Unit and persons from the Social Protection Ministry received information that underage girls and foreign nationals were at the shop engaging in prostitution. As such, a party of Police officers went to the location to conduct an investigation and they found several foreigners at the 33-year-old man’s shop.
The father of three was arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigation Department where further investigation was carried out and the charge instituted.
The Prosecutor did not object to bail. Dawson was released on $100,000 bail. The case will continue on August 5 before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
