Shop owners arraigned with human trafficking

Lawrence and June Williams of Itaki, Mazaruni River were on Thursday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Anne McLennan on allegations that they had trafficked several Venezuelan women for sexual exploitation.
The Williamses were not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that between April 1 and April 30, 2018, June Williams recruited, transported and harboured three Venezuelan nationals for the purpose of sexual exploitation; while her husband Lawrence was accused of doing the same between November 1 and December 31, 2017.
In addition, businesswoman Arita Gould, called “Molly,” was arraigned with allegedly trafficking a Venezuelan woman between May 1 and May 31, 2018 at Puruni Landing.
Shem, too, was not required to enter a plea, and was remanded to prison.
The trio was unrepresented by legal counsels. They will make their next court appearance on July 5, 2018.
