Shopkeeper, businessman remanded on narco trafficking charges

A shopkeeper and a businessman, who reside in Montrose, East Coast Demerara (ECD), and were arrested on Sunday following a Police raid on the premises, made their first court appearance on Thursday after they were each slapped with two narcotics charges.
Fifty-two-year-old Sattie Persaud appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool to answer to the charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and also possession of narcotics.
It was alleged that Persaud was at home when Police officers swooped down on her residence on Sunday. Some 300 grams of cocaine and 10 grams of cannabis were unearthed. Persaud denied both charges but was nonetheless remanded to prison. The case will continue on October 25.
Meanwhile, 35-year-old businessman Parmanand Persaud, who also lived at the same residence and was arrested on Sunday following the discovery by the Police ranks, also pleaded not guilty to the charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and also possession of narcotics.
He was also remanded to prison by the Magistrate. His case will also continue on October 25.
