Silver, Bronze for Squash Doubles at CAC Games

After missing out on the singles’ events at the ongoing Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Guyana’s squash players turned it around to produce Silver and Bronze in the doubles’ events on Wednesday.
Ashley Khalil and Mary Fung-A-Fat added another medal to Guyana’s tally after claiming Silver in the women’s doubles division on Wednesday evening.
The duo came up against a strong Colombian combination of Laura and Paula Tovar in the Gold medal contest and fell in straight games, 11-1, 11-6.
After a slow start in the opening game, the Guyanese pair showed signs of improvement in the second, but the Colombians maintained control to close out the match and secure the title.
Khalil and Fung-A-Fat had earlier cruised through the quarterfinal with a 2-0 victory over Estelle Rodriguez and Bermelyn Pena of the Dominican Republic (11-1, 11-2). The Guyanese later booked their place in the final by defeating Guatemala’s Tabita Gaitan and Darlyn Sandoval in the semifinal, 2-0 (11-8, 11-7).
Meanwhile, Jason-Ray Khalil and Kirsten Gomes earned a Bronze medal for Guyana after concluding their mixed doubles campaign in the semi-final round.
The Guyanese combination reached the last four before meeting Mexico’s Alfredo Avila and Luz Lopez. Despite their strong tournament, Khalil and Gomes were unable to progress to the final, falling 11-4, 11-0.
In the quarterfinal, Khalil and Gomes got the better of Bermuda’s Rachel Barnes and Micah Franklin 2-0 (11-7, 11-9) to move into the medal rounds.
The CAC Games squash competition awards Bronze medals to both losing semi-finalists, ensuring Guyana a place on the mixed doubles podium.
