Digicel’s School Football Championship
Sir Leon’s Lesson maintained their stranglehold on the South Georgetown Zone when they won their third successive title in Digicel’s School Football Championships at the Tucville ground on Sunday.
Greenheart Street unit defeated Masters Academy 5-3 on penalty kicks after the match ended in a trilling 1-1 score line.
Masters’ Andel Smith had given his team the lead in the 43rd minute, which they kept for the majority of the match due to steely defending.
A dramatic twist came in the 62nd minute when a Masters Academy defender was found guilty of a ‘hand-ball’ in the penalty area.
Tyresse Forde had no issue in sealing the penalty to level the scores.
A further mishap for Masters came when their player failed to score the second kick in the sudden penalty shootout.
Sir Leon’s won $100,000, which goes towards a school project and have advanced to the regional quarter-finals.
The champion school will collect $1,000,000, to go towards a project of their choice, along with the championship trophy.
Second, third and fourth placed finishers will receive $700,000, $400,000 and $350,000 respectively; and these sums of money are for a project of the school’s choice.
The final is slated for July 30 at Leonora.
