Social Protection Ministry to launch handbook for TIP victims

The Social Protection Ministry in collaboration with the Trafficking In Persons (TIP) Ministerial Task Force will be launching the first victims’ rights handbook, in observance of World Human Trafficking Day on July 30, 2016.
The handbook is intended to guide TIP victims to realise, understand, accept and demand their rights.
Some of the most common violations of human rights are; the right to personal autonomy, the right not to be held in slavery or servitude, the right to liberty and security, the right to be free from cruel or inhumane treatment , the right to safe, healthy working conditions and the right to freedom of movement.
Tanisha Williams- Corbin, Coordinator (Ag) Counter Trafficking In Persons (C-TIP) Unit, said that, the Ministry will also be launching a campaign titled “Look Out, Speak Out and Take Down” which will be taken to various hotspots.
She explained that the Ministry will be aggressively pushing its awareness campaign to educate citizens about TIP with the aim of preventing, reducing and eliminating the scourge.
Some of the activities planned are roadside gaffs, school awareness sessions for community, structured awareness sessions for community leaders, distribution of educational materials and novelties, and sessions with social minority groups inclusive of Sex Workers’ Coalition and Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination SASOD.
The Ministry will also be providing counselling services for TIP victims, public assistance and necessary psychosocial support in keeping with the Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act of 2005, and provision of technical training and grants and loans for at risk families.
