Soldier dies after crashing into pedestrian, car

A 26-year-old Guyana Defence Force (GDF) rank’s life was cut short on Tuesday after the motorcycle he was driving crashed into a pedestrian, then into a motorcar along the Liliendaal Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Lancelot Giddings, originally from Prince William Street, Plaisance ECD but at the time of his death resident at Tucville, Georgetown, died at about 09:35h on Tuesday following that accident.
Based on reports, Giddings was on his motorcycle proceeding west along the roadway embankment when, in the vicinity of Pump Road, Liliendaal, a pedestrian attempted to cross the road and walked into the path of his motorcycle.
In the resulting collision, the pedestrian Sheldon Booker, 45, fell onto the roadway and received injuries about his body while Giddings lost control of his motorcycle and it crashed into motorcar PMM 309, which was proceeding in the opposite direction.

He and the pedestrian Booker were picked up in an unconscious state by Emergency Medical Technicians and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Police said on Wednesday that the pedestrian Booker is still receiving treatment for head injuries he sustained in the collision. He is in the critical bay of the Accident and Emergency Ward at the GPHC.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of motorcar PMM 309, but no trace of alcohol was found.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage of the accident, and investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Defence Force said in a statement that Giddings was stationed at Base Camp Seweyo on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Just two weeks ago, Brian Mitchell a 36-year-old GDF sergeant of Craig Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, died following a horrific two-vehicle collision along Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown. A seven-year-old child who was in his vehicle also sustained injuries.
It was reported that Mitchell was driving motor car PNN 5516 when he reportedly swerved and collided with motor car PVV 3684, which was being driven by Taishan Shanks and had a female passenger.
Reporting on that accident, Guyana Times said motor car PVV 3684 was proceeding east along Homestretch Avenue while motor car PNN 5516 was proceeding west. As Shanks was in the vicinity of Help and Shelter, he saw the other vehicle swerve from the southern side of the road, from behind another vehicle, and it ended up in his path.
As a result, his vehicle and motor car PNN 5516 collided.
Mitchell and the seven-year-old were picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where Mitchell was pronounced dead. The child was treated for a broken leg and later admitted to the medical facility. (G9)
