Sophia man gets 24 months for stealing Magistrate’s cellphone
A Sophia, Greater Georgetown man has been sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment for stealing a Magistrate’s cellular phone.
Omawalie Caesar, called “Wallie”, 46, was on trial for the offence of simple larceny before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He had initially denied the charge which stated that on November 23, 2021, at Battery Road, Kingston, Georgetown while in the company of others, he stole a Samsung Galaxy Note9 valued at $200,000, property of Magistrate Leron Daly.
Following a trial on Wednesday, he was found guilty as charged by Magistrate Bess.
Guyana Times understands that on the day in question, Magistrate Daly parked her car along Battery Road, Kingston, and went about her business.
Upon her return, she discovered that her car had been broken into and her cellphone missing. She thereafter filed a report with the Police.
During investigations, Police ranks reviewed CCTV footage from the area in which they observed Caesar breaking into the Magistrate’s car and making off with the judicial officer’s phone. As such, he was arrested and charged.
Caesar was previously charged with a similar offence, and that matter is ongoing at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
