Sophia man slapped with ganja possession charge

A 37-year-old miner was on Tuesday arraigned for trafficking in narcotics when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Desmond Rigby of Sophia, Greater Georgetown appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus and denied the charge. He was reportedly arrested on January 20, 2020, at Bartica, Region 7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
The suspect told the court that he was imbibing at a popular shop and got into a scuffle with another man.
He added that he was arrested and taken to the station and the Police asked to conduct a search on his person. He, nevertheless, accused that Police rank of planting the cannabis in his pockets.
Police Prosecutor Quinn Harris told the court that on the day in question, Rigby was arrested and taken to the station after someone had made an allegation against him.
A search was then conducted on his person when the ganja was unearthed.
Rigby was released on $10,000 bail and is slated to make his next court appearance on January 29 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court. The accused was asked to report to Bartica Police Station every Monday until the determination of the matter.
