Guyana’s motor racing landscape is on the path to transformation as the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) gets ready to host the GT Challenge de las Americas, labelled the Guyana Grand Prix.
The event will see a string of high-end GT cars competing at the South Dakota Circuit, Timehri, next weekend, in the third leg of the regional event.
Competitor Kristian Jeffrey recently discussed the positives Guyana can get out of hosting the event.
When asked, Jeffrey said the Guyana Grand Prix can have an impact on the future of the country’s motor racing landscape “in a big way.”
“First off, we’re now getting a first-class facility, and then that should bring a better standard of racing. Having been to this level now, I guess the locals will be able to see how to run an event a little bit more efficiently, and hopefully, we can adapt and make it happen for even our local races,” the Caribbean Champion went on to explain.
Continuing a strong family legacy of racing, Jeffrey is especially excited about the upgrades to the South Dakota Track.
Jeffrey told this publication, “It’s amazing. I’ve been racing in Guyana for close to 15 years, and from my dad, my uncle Andrew King and other guys like that, and seeing the track, where it was and where it is today, kudos to the Government, and kudos to everyone who helped out at GMR&SC to make this event even possible.”
“The track is now, I would say, on par with most of South America, and with more time, I guess, we’ll get on a North American level to bring more people into the country,” the racer opined.
Sharing a bit of what to expect on race day, Jeffrey is cautioning rivals and spectators to brace for war.
“Well, you know I come out to war. So, we’re going to have a good time; expect good wheel-to-wheel racing, and may the best man win,” he stated.
Qualifying for the GT Challenge de las Americas will begin on Saturday, July 11, with race day set for Sunday, July 12.
General tickets are priced at $4000 for Saturday and $9000 for Sunday. Patrons can purchase tickets at the GMR&SC’s Albert Street and Thomas Lands office or Lyft Gym locations.
