Home Sports Sports Hall will be ready for CBC Championships – Jones
Director of Sports, Christopher Jones is confident that the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will be renovated in time for Guyana’s hosting of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) U-16 Caribbean Championship in July this year.
International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has some minimum requirements for the host venue and the Sports Director said that Guyana’s premier indoor sports facility will be ready for the July 3 – 16 showpiece.
The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, according to Jones, will see a complete overhaul, with the focus on ensuring the playing area is resurfaced to complete specification of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), with the guidance of the CBC.
The Director of Sports pointed out that the desired funding for the project will not be an issue and work has already started on the washroom facilities at Guyana’s premier indoor sporting facility.
When questioned about the removal of the Volleyball and Badminton Courts which also utilize the playing surface, Jones said that under the FIBA regulation, only visible lines should be those of the basketball court.
The CBC U-16 Championships will be making a comeback to Guyana after an absence of 17 years while overall, the tournament was last held in Antigua and Barbuda eight years ago.
To date, ten men’s and seven women’s national teams have confirmed their participation. This includes Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname and the hosts Guyana in the Men’s Championship.
