St Lucia ready to make mark at Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Championships

St Lucia is set to make its presence felt at the 2026 Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Championships, with a four-member team arriving in Guyana determined to give a strong account of itself when competition gets underway tomorrow at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The championships, hosted by the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), will run from Thursday through Saturday and feature young boxers from across the Caribbean.
President of the St Lucia Boxing Association, David “Shakes” Christopher, said his country was pleased to be represented at an event he described as an important fixture on the regional boxing calendar.
“In fact, it is a staple for many countries in the Caribbean, so I want to wish the GBA all the best and a successful tournament,” Christopher said.
Leading St Lucia’s contingent will be 17-year-old Alex Nacham, who will compete in the 60kg category. He will be joined by Orlando Monrose, also 17, who will contest the 70kg division.

Another 17-year-old, Daniel Martins, will compete in the 75kg category, while 13-year-old Nervon Mederick will box in the 33kg class.
Christopher said St Lucia has consistently supported the championships over the years, although the island traditionally travelled with a larger delegation.
He explained that the reduced team this year is largely due to the demands placed on Caribbean boxing programmes by a busy international calendar, with several countries coming off campaigns at the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Commonwealth Games.
Christopher also acknowledged the financial challenges affecting several national associations, which have made participation difficult for some countries.
“We see ourselves as a boxing family: Guyana and St Lucia, so it was important for us to be represented,” Christopher said.
St Lucia will join visiting teams from St Maarten, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Curaçao, the Bahamas and Suriname at the championships.
The tournament has been held in honour of Guyanese boxing great Winfield Braithwaite since 2016. Braithwaite won Commonwealth Games gold for Guyana in 1978 and remains an important figure in the country’s boxing history.
