Stakes high in today’s Kadir Mohamed Memorial Cycling

– Overall winner to fetch an ounce of gold

The country’s top cyclists will converge today at the National Sports Commission (NSC) on Homestretch Avenue at the starting point of the Kadir Mohamed Memorial 80-mile Cycling road race.
Jamaul John who sits on the top of the Guyana Cycling Classification table will lead the charge for the local cyclists while the likes of Paul DeNobrega, Raul Leal and GDF’s Alanzo Ambrose will surely be in contention for a podium spot.
However, with Geron Williams and Raynauth “Obeah Man” Jeffrey back on the local scene, it will be an interesting race for the winning prize of an ounce of raw gold.

Guyana’s top cyclists will pedal off today for a total of $1,000,000 in prizes

Just last weekend Williams announced his return to the local scene, from a month long layoff due to injury, with a tactical victory in the annual Hand-in-Hand cycling meet. However, if he is to succeed in the grueling road race, he will need to transfer that form on the asphalt.
The race will begin at 7:30hrs on Homestretch Avenue proceed to Dora on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway before returning to the finish line at the point of origin. The veterans, juveniles and mountain bikers will turn back just after Splashmins.
The race is organized by the Flying Ace Cycling Club and sponsored by the family of the late Kadir Mohamed of Bartica. Mohamed was an avid sport fan who regularly attended cycling events in his free time.
While the overall winner of the race will walk away with a trophy and an ounce of gold, some $763,000 will be spread across the various categories with winners pocketing cash prizes. Ten sprint point cash prizes will also be up for grabs.
In the open category, second to eight place finishers will pocket $85000, $70000, $55000, $35000, $20000, $18000 and $12000 in that order.
Meanwhile in the junior category, first to fourth place will pocket $50000, $40000, $20000 and $15000 respectively. In the Veterans race first to third place winners will receive $50000, $40000 and $20000 as well.
