Suspect confesses: claims acted in self-defence during robbery

Corentyne stabbing

A mechanic from Tain, Corentyne, Region Six (East Corentyne-Berbice), has confessed to stabbing 29-year-old Orlando Jonas of Number One Village, Corentyne, on Saturday evening at Kilcoy.

Dead: Orlando Jonas

Reports are the suspect told investigators that Jonas and his friend, Mahendra Ramnarine, attempted to rob him and one of his friends.
The suspect in his confession statement claimed that he stabbed Jonas in self-defence after the man and his accomplice confronted him with a knife.
Both the suspect and his friend had marks of violence when they went to the police station, which is about two minutes’ walking time from where the incident took place, this newspaper was told.
However, Ramnarine had told this publication that as they were riding home, one of the two men said something to Jonas, who turned around and confronted them.
Investigators were able to obtain surveillance footage of the incident and confrontation.
A source close to the investigation told this publication that it is believed that Jonas and the suspect had an old grievance. However, the investigation is still ongoing.
Jonas was stabbed to the abdomen and suffered lacerations to the face and neck.
At the time of the incident, he was riding a bicycle belonging to his boss, who has since told Police that Jonas had been working for him as a construction worker for the past month.
“He use to work as a labourer on a truck but he was not getting work so he came and ask me for [a job]…I know him from the village so I took him on,” the employer told this publication.
The now dead man’s aunt Jacqueline Jonas said he was not the kind of persons who would get into conflicts. (G4)
