One day after the brutal murder of seven-year-old Adriel Aftab Mohamed and the attempted murder of his great-grandmother, the Police have arrested the suspected perpetrator. This was confirmed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police and Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum, on Saturday, who stated that the alleged suspect was arrested at his residence in Region Three (Essequibo Island-West Demerara).
“He was arrested earlier today and is currently being interviewed by detectives,” Blanhum added. The throat of the seven-year-old child was slashed, and his great-grandmother was stabbed in the neck during an apparent home invasion on Friday at their Phase 3, Zeelugt New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) home.

The lifeless body of the child was found lying in a pool of blood, while his great-grandmother was found stabbed in the neck and lying on the ground at about 05:05h on Friday. According to reports received, a relative went to the home, where he discovered the 72-year-old woman injured and the child motionless inside the house. The injured woman was taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where she was admitted as a patient. Her condition is listed as stable.
On the other hand, the child suffered a gaping wound to his neck. A knife, suspected to have been used during the incident, was recovered at the scene.
Following the gruesome discovery, the child’s uncle, Naseeb Mohamed, said he was at home when he received a telephone call informing him that someone was inside his mother’s house. Upon arriving at the residence, he pushed open the door and entered. After switching on the lights, he discovered his mother lying on the floor.
He said he could not explain what happened but noted that the two adults who usually stay in the home with his mother and the child had travelled to Essequibo for work. The aggrieved uncle also mentioned that they obtained CCTV footage from nearby residents, which shows a single individual climbing over the gate.
The boy’s father, Altaf Mohamed, is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his son, expressing deep regret that he was not present to protect him. He said the child had been left at home alone because he had gone out to work, adding that he had previously taken his son away from his mother because he did not want him raised by a stepfather. Mohamed explained that he had intended to collect his son on Friday morning but was told by his father that he would instead handle the pickup.
That plan changed when he later received a phone call from his sister informing him that his son had been killed. He appealed for the Police to fully investigate and bring those responsible to justice. On Saturday, the crime scene was still being processed, and as such, the family members were not given access to the house.
“Now that the suspected killer has been arrested, he will be taken to the scene, and once investigations are completed, the house will be handed over to the family,” a Police source told the Guyana Times.
