Tahir eyes back-to-back GSL titles for Warriors

The Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) are leaving nothing to chance as they prepare for Saturday’s ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL) final, with veteran Captain Imran Tahir insisting his side must correct the shortcomings that surfaced during the group stage if they are to lift the title.
GAW secured the top spot in the standings with three consecutive victories, to book their place in the championship match where they will face the winner of Friday night’s qualifier between the San Francisco Unicorns and Desert Vipers.
Reflecting on his team’s performances, Tahir admitted the batting unit has repeatedly encountered difficulties in the middle overs on the challenging Providence surface, but believes those experiences should serve as valuable lessons heading into the final.

“The conditions have been tough for batting here in Providence, but we are professionals and we have to adapt after one or two games,” Tahir said.
He noted that overs seven through 12 have consistently tested the Warriors, although experienced players have repeatedly stepped up to guide the team home.
“We’ve spoken about those middle overs because that’s where we’ve struggled. Strong characters in the team have taken us over the line in a few matches, but we don’t want to make the same mistakes in the final because that’s the only game we have left.”
Tahir also underlined the importance of claiming the GSL crown, saying finishing anywhere other than first would not satisfy the team’s ambitions.
“You come here to win. You don’t come here to finish second or third, because people remember champions,” he stated.

Although the South African leg-spinner has not enjoyed a prolific tournament with the ball, he dismissed any concerns over his personal returns, stressing that team success remains his only priority.
“I know I haven’t taken many wickets, but that’s how tournaments go sometimes. There are times you bowl well without getting rewards. I feel I’ve been bowling well and I’ve had great support from the other bowlers.”
Tahir reserved special praise for fellow spinners Gudakesh Motie and Mohammad Nabi, both of whom have played pivotal roles throughout the campaign.
“Motie has been brilliant this season, and Nabi has been unbelievable. If I can chip in with one or two crucial wickets, that’s my role. I’m not worried about who performs as long as we win the competition.”
With one match separating the Warriors from consecutive GSL titles, Tahir believes executing their plans through the crucial middle overs and maintaining their collective approach will be key to successfully defending their crown.
