Tallawahs hold nerve to clinch nail-biter over Tridents

CPL 2019…

Jamaica Tallawahs overcame Barbados Tridents by five runs in a low-scoring thriller at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Chris Gayle bowled all ends up

After posting 127 all out, Tallawahs successfully defended this total by restricting the Tridents to 122-9 in 20 overs, the experienced Dwayne Smith bowling the final over to defend 15 runs.
When Jason Holder had earlier won the toss and elected to field first, Jamaica Tallawahs got off to a slow start, losing Chris Gayle for a single run in the second over when Holder got him to drag one on to his stumps with the score on 11.
Glenn Phillips continued his good form in the tournament, but lacked support from his team mates.

Glenn Phillips top-scored for Tallawahs

Chadwick Walton was removed for 13 off the bowling of Sandeep Lamicchhane when he got a leading edge that went to slip. At the end of the power play, Tallawahs were 43-2, with Tridents continuing to chip away at wickets.
JP Duminy removed George Worker for six, and leg-spinner Lamichhane removed Dwayne Smith for one. At 66-4 at the half-way stage, Tallawahs further slumped to 77-5, losing Phillips for 41 from 35 balls. The Tallawahs continued their poor outing this season, and at the rain break were 108-8 in 18.3 overs.
The heavens opened at 19:38h but the covers came off at 20:10h and play resumed with no overs lost.
Ramaal Lewis hit Raymon Reifer some lusty blows in smashing him for two successive sixes followed by a four. Lewis’s cameo of 27 from 22 balls ended, as did the Tallawahs innings, on the final ball of their 20 overs.
Holder, Lamichanne and Reifer had two wickets each as Tallawahs ended on 127 all out.
In response, Tallawahs went with slow bowlers in the first four overs, and reaped rewards, with the big wicket of Alex Hales falling for a run-a-ball 16 to leave the score at 25-1 in four overs.

Tridents celebrates a wicket

Tallawahs kept it tight, and runs were scarce for the Tridents. Dot balls build the pressure, and Justin Greaves was the second wicket to fall with the score on 38-2 in 7.3 overs. Opener Johnson Charles kept his cool and anchored the innings, but he lost Duminy when the impressive Smith outfoxed him with a slower ball.
The Kensington pitch became slower and batting became more difficult, thus the Tridents were 49-3 in 10 overs. Jonathan Carter played some timely shots, but his brief innings of 17 ended with the score on 74-4. With 54 needed from 42 balls, Charles threw his wicket away for a 35-ball 31. Holder and Ashley Nurse followed soon after, as the Tridents fell like nine pins in a bowling alley.

Shamar Springer and Imran Khan, bowling in tandem, picked up wickets to hobble the Tridents. Reifer, last hope for the Bajans, took 15 off Springer’s last over, the penultimate over of the innings. With 15 required off six balls and two wickets in hand, it was down for a thrilling finish.
Barbadian boy Smith was asked to bowl the last over, and Reifer got on strike for the second ball. He clobbered Smith’s length delivery over the leg-side for a six, and in the third ball he picked up two runs. With six needed off three, Tridents were confident, until Smith ended Reifer’s 12-ball 26 with a slower ball that Reifer clobbered to deep cover.
Smith then produced a dot ball, and the last man in for Tridents, Harry Gurney, was clueless. He bowled another dot ball to seal the match for Tallawahs with a thrilling 5-run win.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots will meet St Lucia Zouks today from 18:00h local time while Guyana Amazon Warriors will battle Zouks the following day from 18:00h.
