Twenty-six-year-old Yudhister Samjawan, of Third Street, Alexander Village, Georgetown, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by Senior Magistrate Dylon Bess after the prosecution proved he broke into the house of Yanti Stephens and stole a number of items.
The young man who was on trial initially pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated the on October 4, 2019, at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he broke into the dwelling house of Stephens and stole one phone, a pair of female underwear and $50,000 in cash.
The court was told that on the day in question, the woman was awoken by a noise and as such, she got out of her bed to investigate when she found Samjawan crawling on her floor.
She immediately raised an alarm and the man fled the scene via a nearby trench.
According to the Prosecutor, the Police were summoned and the accused, who was found hiding in a trench alongside the street, was arrested.
The items were found in his possession. The defendant was subsequently charged.
After finding sufficient evidence against Samjawan, Magistrate Bess ruled that he be sentenced to three years behind bars.
