Taxi driver nabbed with 5kg ganja in Parika remanded to prison

Twenty-three-year-old Uday Monilall, a taxi driver of Unity village, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was on Tuesday slapped with a trafficking in narcotics charge when he appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

The young man, who is also a carpenter, was arrested on Thursday last after he was intercepted with 5.248 kilograms of imported ganja at Parika Ferry Stelling, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) stated that the drug was found in a haversack belonging to the man after he arrived at Parika Stelling via speedboat.
Based on reports received, a search was conducted on his person during which five “brick like” objects containing the ganja were unearthed.
The suspect was escorted to CANU Headquarters where the cannabis was analysed and proved to be an imported drug known as “poppy”. The street value is estimated at over $1 million.
Meanwhile, he pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him on Tuesday and as such, he was remanded to prison by Magistrate Zamina Ali Seepersaud until October 12, 2021.
Only last week, Vickey Doodnauth, 23, and Richie Sewadhan, 19, of Market Street, Rose Hall, were remanded to prison for having in their possession 12.8kg cannabis. The duo was intercepted at Paradise, ECD, while travelling in a vehicle. The ganja was found in the bags belonging to the two men.
They will make their next court appearance on September 17, 2021.
