Taxi found in Berbice hours after hijacking

– 2 suspects arrested during Police operation

Hours after a gun-toting bandit and his accomplice hijacked a yellow Toyota Wagon bearing registration number HB 6272, it was found in Berbice along with two occupants.
Commander of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) Sub-division “A” (Georgetown), Assistant Police Commissioner Edgar Thomas explained that the vehicle was recovered on Saturday evening in Weldaad, West Coast Berbice, Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice).
He explained that a police operation has led to the arrests of the duo- one of the suspects was driving the vehicle while the other was in the front passenger’s seat.
The driver of the taxi was relieved of the car on Saturday at about 6:15h in the vicinity of Cane View, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown. As soon as it as reported, investigators began their hunt for the car and the perpetrators.
As a customary, messages were sent to various police stations across the country to notify them of the incident and for ranks to be on the lookout for the vehicle.
Upon recovering the car, the two suspects were arrested and transported to Georgetown where they are being grilled.
On Saturday morning, the 48-year-old taxi driver who hails from Rosetta Village, Canal Number Two Polder, West Bank Demerara (WBD) was in the vicinity of Stabroek Market Square, Georgetown when two men approached him and requested to be taken to Cane View, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Upon arrival at that destination, one of the suspects reportedly whipped out a gun and pointed it at the driver’s face who was subsequently pushed out of the car before the perpetrators escaping the scene.
On January 2, a motor vehicle was stolen less than five hours after the driver parked it in front of his home and retired to bed.
The Hope Low Lands, East Coast Demerara (ECD) resident had retired to bed and as he woke up at 02:15h the next morning, he realised that the car was missing. The stolen car belonged to a butcher who had employed a man to operate as a taxi.
