In a bid to decentralise sport, the National Sports Commission (NSC) is hosting a seminar aimed at edifying Physical education teachers on the fundamentals of boxing.

The three-day session which opened on Wednesday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora also has an emphasis placed on educating teachers about the basics of the sport to aid in their deliverance of the Physical Education subject at the Caribbean Examinations Council level.
“We would like to see that the students are taught the basic requirements of boxing which would be a requirement for the Caribbean Examinations Council Physical education syllabus as well allowing you to be qualified at the basic level to conduct your training sessions at the school,” Assistant Director of Sport Brian Smith told the gathering.

National Boxing Coach Wincell Thomas addressing the teachers on the elementariness of boxing

National Boxing coach, Wincell Thomas explained that the sessions are not to teach the full contact aspect of the sport but rather the elementary positions. Thomas further explained that schools can be competitive since they can be graded on having the proper posture and knowledge of basic striking shots and defence.
With a target group of 10 schools and 20 persons, Region three Sports Organiser Deon Carew hopes that despite the limited resources for the sport, teachers can use their newly acquired and to best instil the skills upon the students.
Next week a similar programme is expected to be held in Region Nine at Lethem, this time with the focus being on cricket.
