Team draws hints at exciting group action

Petra/Limacol Round Robin Knock-out Football…

− Kick-off set for January 23 at GFC

The second Petra Organised Limacol Round Robin Knock out Football Tournament completed its team draw on Saturday at the Spice Garden Restaurant, Campbellville and the kick-off date is now set for Monday January 23 at the Georgetown Football Club, (GFC), Bourda.

The draw which was done in the presence of Financial Manager of New Guyana Pharmaceutical Corporation Incorporated Dwayne Lovell, Petra Co-Director Troy Menondca and team officials was aimed at showing the transparency.

Some of the groups have pitted top first division teams in Guyana who will battling for a top two spot to enter the second phase.

The group of death seems to be the Group A which comprises of defending champions Milerock, top Linden side, Winners Connection, East Bank Champions, Grove Hi Tech and Northern Rangers.

Group B comprises of: Western Tigers, Uitvulgt, Eagles United and New Amsterdam United; Group C: Santos FC, Pouderoyen, Den Amstel and Ann’s Gove United and Group D: Police Force FC, Riddim Squad, Campton FC and Mahica Determinators.

The long awaited kick off is set for Monday January 23 with Police Football Club taking on Determinators followed by Riddim Squad against Campton FC.

Mendonca was quizzed on his viewpoint of having the tournament in the future reach the standard of possible parallel league to the Elite League as a way of being the avenue for relegation and promotion of teams.

He stated, “There are plans that the Guyana Football Federation [GFF] have in stream but that is for them to disclose, but it is our dream, there is no intention with the powers of the sport, that is just where we want this tournament go and hopefully over the next two or three years the standard will raise and the GFF can consider this as such league.”

With matches being set to play at GFC, Victoria Ground on the East Coast of Demerara, Leonora Stadium (West Demerara) and McKenzie Sports Club (Linden), Mendonca is pleased with the interest shown by teams thus far and said that he is happy to be part of an activity aimed at enhancing the sport.

The top teams will complete for a $500,000 first place prize while second to third will receive $250,000, $125,000 and $75,000 respectively. In addition, the top three teams in the groups will be rewarded $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000.
