Team set to depart Guyana on Monday

Guyana’ National Mini-Cadet and Pre-Cadet Table Tennis Tournament…

Guyana’ National Mini-Cadet (11 years and under) and Pre-Cadet (13 years and under) table tennis contingents are set to depart Guyana tomorrow for the Dominican Republic, to contest the 2019 Caribbean Mini- and Pre-Cadet Championships scheduled for August 19-27.

The Caribbean Cadet and Junior Championships is an activity that engages girls and boys between the ages of 11 and 13 years in the Caribbean region. It is one of the signature competitions on the Caribbean and GTTA calendar of events, since its forms the basis for regional table tennis supremacy and is the incubator and platform for the development of young emerging table tennis talents.

Guyana’s representatives, a very formidable group of players, has National 13, 18 and 15-years-and-under Boys Champion Jonathan Van Lange. the talented Colin Wong, Krystian Sahadeo, Dhanesh Persaud, who are in their fourth and final cycle of competing at the Mini- and Pre-Cadet levels, will form Guyana’s under-13 boys’ team. The team also consists of the Boys’ 11 years and-under players Malachi Moore, who is currently in the Dominican Republic participating in the World Hopes Caribbean training camp, and the fast-improving and energetic Ebo Mc Neil (debutant Linden).
The under-11 girls’ team consists of national 11- &13-years-and-under girls’ champion Jasmine Billingy; the talented Akira Watson, and the tenacious Samara Sukhai, who are strong candidates for possible medal performances.
The team will be coached by Shavin Greene and Dwain Dick, with assistance from Colin France.
The GTTA has commenced planning its activities on a 4-6 years’ cyclical basis, and sees the selected players as prospects to transition as Guyana’s key representatives at regional and international tournaments, Junior Olympics, and Junior Olympic cycle games in the future.
Guyana has had a rich tradition of success in this sport, winning several medals and bringing Guyana regional honours at the regional level. The competing teams include Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Aruba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, St Lucia and St Vincent & the Grenadines.
Competition for regional honours will be in the categories of Boys and Girls 11 and 13 years, team doubles, mixed doubles, and singles’ events.
The team selected to participate in the championships consist of:
Under–11 Boys: Malachi Moore and Ebo McNeil
Under-11 Girls: Jasmine Billingy, Samara Sukhai, and Akira Watson
Under-13 Boys: Jonathan Van Lange, Krystian Sahadeo, Colin Wong, and Dhanesh Persaud.
