Teen lived in agony from advances by 52-year-old man – relatives

Ruimveldt chopping-suicide

The 14-year-old girl whose mother was chopped after she refused to allow a man to have a relationship with her teen daughter has been living in agony for some time now as a result of advances by the now dead boat captain.
Fifty-two-year-old Jeffrey Narine had in the past made several advances towards the 14-year-old girl of Riverview, Ruimveldt, Georgetown, even as she on several occasions rejected him and rebuked him for his behaviour.
One day after the incident, one of the teen’s close relatives told this publication that on several occasions, the teen complained about the man of La Parfaite Harmonie’s inappropriate behaviour towards her.
According to the relative, several reports were made to the police but on all the occasions, the man was arrested and later released.
On Monday, Police said the man went to the teen’s mother at about 09:00h and threatened the woman. Police said that Narine threatened to kill both mother and daughter if he was not allowed to be in a relationship with the teen. He again returned to the home at about 13:00h, this time armed with two cutlasses, and dealt the teen’s mother several chops about her body.
The woman was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
However, following the incident, Police said that Narine went and sat on a bench in front of a shop and upon seeing the police, he used one of his weapons and injured himself.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel were summoned to the scene and he was pronounced dead.
When Guyana Times visited the home of the injured woman on Tuesday, her husband explained that in the past, Narine had approached his stepdaughter and because she had refused his advances, he hit her to the head, causing the young woman to fall unconscious and become hospitalised.
He said ever since the man would not allow the teen to live in peace.
Another relative said that Narine had offered the teen a juice but because she refused, he hit her to the head with a glass bottle. This newspaper was told that the teen’s brother, upon seeing what had occurred, went to his sister’s defence and stabbed the man several times about his body.
“The story went to the police and finish. He as a big man come back here looking for problem. I see when he run in the yard with the cutlass but I say he bluffing, shortly after I see they fetching she out the yard,” the relative said.
Residents of the community also told this publication that the man has been a nuisance for some time now.
Meanwhile, the teen’s mother is still hospitalised. (LaWanda McAllister)
