Region 10 hosts “Tourism Day” exposition

Tourism Awareness Month

Exhibitors at the Linden Regional Tourism Day exposition showcasing local arts, craft and products

As Tourism Awareness Month observances continue, the Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) Tourism Committee hosted a Regional “Tourism Day” exposition, showcasing local arts, craft and products in Linden on Friday.
Local producers came together for the event which was conducted along the Mackenzie riverfront at Co-op Crescent in Linden.
The event, which was hosted under the theme, “Region 10, Guyana’s Gem”, was aimed at promoting local products and services. A number of agro-processors and producers from across the region utilised the opportunity to have their products on display.
Speaking at the formal ceremony to mark the occasion, President of the Linden Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Development, Victor Fernandes said he was pleased to be a part of the experience as he commended the Committee for its work.
“As the Chamber of Commerce, we play an important part in advocating for businesses and the expansion of industries for and on behalf of Linden…Region 10, as it is, under the theme where we say that we are the ‘Gem of Guyana’; I honestly believe that, since because of our strategic location where we are connected to 6 other regions and because we are unique in the fact that we are the only town with a river running through the centre. It has given us an advantage, whereby we can be of tremendous benefit – our flora and fauna…bird species that we have in our region and our natural habitat, which can in a lot of ways enhance our tourism development in Region 10,” Fernandes said.
He noted, however, that the region requires improved infrastructure, environmental conditions and direct investments especially in the hospitality sector to realise its true potential. Fernandes said that with more advanced hotel facilities coming to Guyana, his hope is that Linden will not be overlooked. He also urged all to continue to advocate for development and investment in the Region 10 community, in an effort to have it transformed economically. Fernandes also pledged the Chamber’s continued support to the overall development of the region. The event was also attended by Director General of the Tourism Ministry, Donald Sinclair. (Utamu Belle)
