Teens die after overdosing on painkillers

Two teenagers are now dead after they allegedly ingested a quantity of painkillers over the past few days.
In the first instance, a 13-year-old of La Belle Alliance, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) ingested the tablets on Friday, but succumbed while receiving medical attention on Sunday at the Suddie Regional Hospital.
While details surrounding the teen’s death remain sketchy, the reason for her wanting to end her life is known.
When contacted, Regional Police Commander, Superintendent Crystal Robinson explained that the teen’s family told detectives that after realising she had ingested the pills, they rushed her to the hospital in an unconscious state.
Commander Robinson said that she was unable to give further information as it related to the teen’s death until the post-mortem is conducted on Thursday.
Child Care and Protection Agency (CCPA) Welfare Officers were contacted and are providing counselling to the grieving family.
Meanwhile, on Monday, a 16-year old girl of Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) died after she also ingested a large quantity of tablets.
It is still unclear what led to the teen committing suicide, but Guyana Times was told that after consuming the pills, she was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An investigation into this matter is ongoing.
