Teens escape from Corentyne orphanage

…2 found wandering in Blairmont, handed over to CC&PA

Two of the three teenage girls who reportedly ran away from the Canaan Orphanage in Port Mourant, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), three weeks ago, have been found.
They were discovered wandering along the streets of Blairmont, Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), on Monday evening and were immediately handed over to the Child Care and Protection Agency (CC&PA).
The two girls were sent to different orphanages as investigations continue.
Region Six Commander Jairam Ramlakhan when contacted told Guyana Times that the 14- and 15-year-old girls were found on Monday evening.
The third girl is yet to be located. The girls’ mothers have confirmed that authorities contacted and informed them that their daughters are alive and well.
According to the mother of the 15-year-old, she was contacted by the Child Care and Protection Agency on Tuesday and told that her daughter was found. She noted that she was taken to an orphanage in Georgetown. She however, noted that the arrangement was temporary.
The Child Care and Protection Agency is expected to meet with the parents today to determine the way forward.
Following the disappearance of the three teenagers, their parents had come forward blaming the Child Care and Protection Agency for the manner in which the issue was dealt with.
They also accused that Canaan Orphanage of neglect and stated that the facility does not have the capacity to adequately take care of children.
The parents had also called for the Child Care and Protection Agency to investigate the affairs of Canaan Orphanage.
