As part of the 50th Independence (Golden Jubilee) celebrations, sports organizer, James ‘Kool’ Lewis successfully hosted the Trophy Stall work place super 8 overs tape ball knockout cricket competition Sunday last, May 15 on the National Cultural Center tarmac. Eight (8) teams took part in the event; Guyana Energy Authority (GEA), Transport and Harbours (T&H), the Guyana Oil Company (GUYOIL), Forestry Commission, Demerara Bank Ltd (DBL), Namilco, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Felix Austin Police Training College.
In the first match DBL defeated GUYOIL while Transport and Harbours knocked out GEA. Meanwhile, Namilco got the better of EPA and the Felix Austin Police Training College defeated the Forestry Commission to advance to the semi-finals.
Transport and Harbor faced off against DBL in the first semi-final match of which they came out victorious.
The bankers batted first posting 48 runs in their 8 overs. Transport and Harbour then cruised to victory in 6 overs scoring 51 runs to complete the chase and book a place in the finals. Sheldon Chapman led his team to victory scoring 24 runs for T&H while K. Chanderpaul topped scored for DBL with 22 runs.
The other semi-finals saw Namilco defeating Felix Austin Police Training College by 5 wickets with 2 balls to spare. The police training college batted first putting up a total of 67 runs for 6 wickets with Jason McCalmont scoring 38 runs. Namilco then went about the run chase and got there in 7.4 overs finishing on 69 for 5 wickets. Namilco captain, Elroy Fernandes led the way with a breezy 52. That innings knock turned out to be the tournament’s highest individual score.
In the grand final, Transport and Harbour continued their dominance when they chased down 73 runs posted by Namlico without the loss of a wicket. Namilco took the crease first scoring 73 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. T. Hector finished with 28 runs for Namlico. Transport and Harbor were then sent in to bat as they cruised to victory scoring 75 runs in 7.4 overs without loss. Sheldon Chapman posted 39 runs while Deamon Whitney scored 36 runs for the winning side.
Transport and Harbours team received medals and a trophy from the Trophy Stall. The man of the match in the
final was Sheldon Chapman who also received a prize.
James Lewis has indicated that the next competition will be on May 29, 2016.
