The battle of the best

Lochan Premier League set for February 29

The Rising Stars Cricket Club will again be competing in a grand T20 knockout competition sponsored by overseas-based Guyanese Lochan, aka Mali, and his family at the Malvern Cricket Club Ground at Canal Number One, under the name Lochan Premier League on February 29, 2020.

The Rising Stars
The Mc Gill Superstars will be in action

Participating teams will be battling for the right to be called the number one T20 team in Canal Number One. The reward for successful teams will be more than US$2000 in cash and prizes, all sponsored by Lochan. Some of the competing teams are Rising Stars, Mc Gill Superstars, Malvern Sports Club, and New York Strikers.
The day of the event will end with a floodlight tape-ball cricket competition in which the teams will be battling for a first-place prize of $100,000, while the runners-up will pocket $20,000. All participating teams are encouraged to walk with their own balls.
In an interview with <<<Guyana Times Sport>>>, Captain of the Rising Stars side, Elroy Fernandes, said, “We are happy that Lochan is giving back to the community. We are hoping to come out on top and cop both prizes. Winning this would help us to get our ground in order and finish it. This would allow the young people in the village to participate. Nevertheless, we are looking forward to the challenge, as the competition would feature players such as Devendra Bishoo and other First-Division players, which would make a win against them even sweeter. I believe this competition will help us to get better, I know that for a team that isn’t recognised in Guyana, we have lots of talent, and I’m confident that we will soon produce players that are worthy to represent Guyana at all levels of cricket.”
Also sharing his views was former national player Travis Persaud of Mc Gill Superstars who said, “Well, basically it’s a Canal Number One premier league sponsored by an overseas-based Guyanese and former Mc Gill player. Friday night will be the drawing to see who will play who. We are the team to beat in this competition, because we have been dominating West Dem cricket for a while now and since this league limits just Canal teams to play, we expect to win. Canal is a relatively large village and of the three teams, we are the most successful and most, if not everyone, expects us to win this competition. Having three national youth players and a lot of experienced guys in the team, we are most likely the favourites.”
The Rising Stars side will be dependent on their players Marvin Cheong, Shane Persaud, Shaquille Brisport and Captain Elroy Fernandes, who has had a successful 2019 leading the team with the bat. While the Mc Gill Superstars have a plethora of players to choose from such as Travis Persaud, Abdul Razack, and Keshram Seyhodan among others.
The first ball is set to be bowled at 09:00h.
