At the time, no one was at home.
Manager of the restaurant Kelly Datt said they left home on Saturday evening to attend a function on West Coast Berbice. It was her father who returned home at about 15:00h Sunday and then informed her that the shop was broken into. When she arrived she found the entire house ransacked. The thieves entered the building by removing a board from the front wall which is visible from the road. “We din see no goods missing only the rum missing so we went upstairs and check because the owner for the house have some expensive liquor in his room and I was afraid that they carry away all of that because we can’t afford to buy it back, but I see that rum still is there; I can’t say if they take any because I don’t know how much rum they had,” she told this publication. An old typewriter which resembled a safe was also of interest to the thieves but they could not get it opened.
It was left alone. According to Datt, the thieves searched the entire house including an envelope with pictures which they repacked. “They raise up all dem beds, take away all the US that we had and the Guyana money, even the shop money that we had to buy things for the shop today, so today we can’t buy anything; everything clear.” She said the police were called and responded promptly but asked the family not to touch anything until the fingerprint experts turned up.
Up to Monday evening, the police had not returned.
“We had to fix back the wall and the things dem in the house because they didn’t come Sunday and whole day Monday.”
According to a police source, the matter is being investigated. The source said investigators are trying to make contact with some persons in the village.
