…as video threats against CANU head surfaces
The Home Affairs Ministry has confirmed that law enforcement agencies are investigating a video circulating on social media that appears to contain threats against Director of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), James Singh.
In a statement, the ministry said any threat against the life of a public official is a serious criminal offence and is being treated as such.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the source, authenticity and intent of the video. The ministry added that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and security of those targeted.
The development comes amid heightened anti-narcotics operations across Guyana.
According to the ministry, during the first quarter of 2026, CANU removed more than 371 kilograms of narcotics from circulation and disrupted several trafficking networks through intelligence-led enforcement efforts.
Officials noted that while the current security concern comes during an intensified anti-drug campaign, the investigation into the video remains ongoing and no conclusions have yet been reached.
The Government also warned that threats against law enforcement officers will be met with the full force of the law.
It further stated that efforts to dismantle organised criminal networks, both local and international, will continue through coordinated enforcement operations.
The ministry maintained that no individual or group will be allowed to undermine the rule of law or threaten officers carrying out their duties.
In August 2025, local law enforcement officials and international partners was alerted to a threat against the life of Singh.
Based on information received at the time, the threats may have originated from major drug cartels within South America and the Caribbean whose consignments were either intercepted or is being targeted. Since returning to the helm of the drug enforcement agency, Singh’s leadership has resulted in the dismantling of drug trades in and out of Guyana. In an invited comment in August 2025, Singh related that a threat on his life is also one on the Unit and ultimately the country.
